PageRank™ FAQ's:
What Is Page Reputation and Link Relevancy?
Let us assume you are a Cosmetic Dentist in Chicago with a web site promoting your dental services. You have the opportunity to showcase some of your Smile Makeovers on TV. The TV station has a web site, and a short story about the interview is published on their web site in the Dental Cosmetics section. The story contains a link to your web site with the words "Chicago Cosmetic Dentist Smile Makeovers" as the anchor text. (This is the underlined text you normally see which is the visual indication of a hyperlink).
When a visitor to the TV station's web site sees the link, the normal assumption would be that the TV station is of the opinion that the the Cosmetic Dentist in question can really perform Smile Makeovers and it would be a good resource if you are in the market for a Smile Makeover.
When Google sends it's spider (GoogleBot) to crawl the TV station's site, it already know that the site is trusted. It is a news station, and responsible humans will closely monitor the content as their reputation will be at stake when linking to bad sites. The link is deemed relevant and on-topic as it is on a Chicago news station, on the Dental Cosmetics page.
Google should therefore interpret the link as a vote of confidence for the dentist's site and will assign a level of trust (PageRank™). Google will further record that the Page Reputation is "Chicago Cosmetic Dentist Smile Makeovers".
More similar links will further endorse the Page Relevancy and Google will up it's trust level (PageRank™) of the Dental Cosmetic's page.
